TASK 3: DESIGN

Week 5 (06/03/2024)

Requirements:
  1. Produce a work of design, inspired by the one you analyzed from Task 2, and apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation.
  2. You may use any medium/materials that are suitable to convey your visual image, direct use of photographs isn't permitted.
  3. Some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas.
  4. 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of your own ideas.
  5. Final design in A4 size, JPEG.
  6. A rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defining the decisions made in your design, the meaning/purpose of the design, and the design principles that are found in the design.
  7. Feedback from the lecturer.

Progress:

Preliminary Ideas

I chose UNSDG 16 - Peace, Justice, And Strong Institutions and analyzed "Liberty Leading The People" by Eugène Delacroix. Before finding some visual references, I made a note about the ideas I wanted to present for the design.

Basically, I was inspired by a game called: Tears of Themis by miHoYo. The player holds the role of an unnamed 24-year-old female defense lawyer at Themis Legal Office, assisting her clients in different cases. Although I only played for about two weeks before stopping, the game has an enjoyable plot and lessons to be learned while playing. It offers a rich setting for learning about several aspects of the legal system, as well as features of mystery and problem-solving. The start menu loading screen with Themis (god of Justice) caught my attention the most, yet they changed the statue to the main character, who also carries the same message as Themis.

Innocent Witness, a Korean film directed by Lee Han in 2019, also explores justice, empathy, and tolerance. In the movie, Soon-ho (Jung Woo-sung), a lawyer at a respected company, is faced with a difficult decision when he defends a client accused of murder to grow his career. He has to deal with the problems of representing an autistic witness, Ji-woo (Kim Hyang-gi), while keeping up with personal growth and justice.

Visual References

From my perspective, "No Justice, No Peace" by Kailey Whitman carries the same meaning as my chosen UNSDG: 16 - Peace, Justice, And Strong Institutions. The people in the foreground (below) raise fists in the air for defiance purposes and are a symbol of resilience and determination to bring out the change of law development.

Besides that, Themis is in the middle ground, she is facing straight ahead and blindfolded, which can be seen as she isn't biased on other influences. She also holds a sword and a balance, representing the carrying out of justice and the weighing of evidence. Her gesture expresses power and involvement, showing the goal of justice and the development of strong institutions.

Furthermore, the doves appear in the background, representing the symbol of peace with justice that exists in the artwork. In addition, the movement of clouds in the sky is giving a sense of calm and stability. Overall, the blue colour is used in this artwork as a symbol of peace, a sign of reliability with the characters' actions.

"Justice" by Anna Mokeeva, also carries the same meaning as my chosen UNSDG: 16 - Peace, Justice, And Strong Institutions. The figure in the center has the same identity as Themis, he is holding the sword, and the balance is the justice symbol. He is wearing a red costume, which contrasts him from the dark surroundings. His eyes gaze down on the two individuals, who kneel before him to wait for his judgment. Personally, I love the way how Justice (the person in the red costume) stands out in this artwork because the red colour causes strong feelings like passion, determination, and intensity. It can relate to the importance and urgency of maintaining justice in society.

Week 6 (13/03/2024)

Manual Sketches

I sketched out 3 manual sketches on my sketchbook with a brief concept before deciding on the final design. The common idea of my sketches was the statue of Themis because she represents the symbol of Justice.

Final Design

After consultation with Mr Zeon, we decided to proceed with Sketch #1 - 'The Judgement of Justice' as the final design. This is the moodboard of my final design, which included references to the statue of Themis, pose, clothing, interior architecture, and plant.

Rationale

Figure T3.17: Final Design - 'The Judgement of Themis' in JPG, Week 7 (20/03/2024)

Meaning/Purpose:
The design concept is surrounded by UNSDG 16 - Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. I was inspired by Romanticism's expressive style and the artist Eugène Delacroix, who portrays a sense of intensity and deep emotion in his artwork. By emphasizing the social aspects of Justice - how it is seen and considered, the artwork aims to portray a complex and emotional narrative through the use of composition, expression, and symbolism. This allows the audience to think about the built-in conflicts and values surrounding justice in society.

The sketch shows the audience in the foreground, all eyes glued on the person in the centre, with judging/suspicious/calm/gossiping expressions. The person in the centre is waiting for the statue of Themis (the goddess of justice in Greek mythology, who represents the ideal of justice and equity in judgment) to decide. The Statue of Themis is in the middle, reviewing rationally without concern for the person's appearance or other influences. (154 words)

Figure T3.18: Design Principles of 'The Judgement of Themis', Week 7 (20/03/2024)

Design Principles:
  1. Balance - Symmetrical balance with equal "weight" on the equal sides.
  2. Contrast - The most lightness on the statue of the Themis, the individual has little lightness, and most of the darkness on the audience to convey the dramatic scene.
  3. Emphasis - The focus mainly is on the Themis due to the most lightness and the individual that only has little lightness because he is getting a judgment from the Themis.
  4. Symbol - On the stained glass art, the Black-eyed Susan vines symbolise justice; candles symbolise hope for justice. (85 words)

Total Word Number: 235 words

FEEDBACKS

Week 6 (13/03/2024)

Specific Feedback:
Mr Zeon preferred sketch 1 - 'The Judgement of Themis', so just continue with it. But needed to explain more design principles for the sketch.

Week 7 (20/03/2024)

General Feedback:
Continue to work on the progress.

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
It was quite enjoyable to do this task because it didn't have much of a limit on the medium, so we could explore/use the medium we wanted to use for this task.

Observation:
Try to note down as much as possible whenever getting ideas.
