Week 10 (29/11/2023)
Task 3 Briefing
- As part two of the previous assignment, which is Task 2: Decisive Moment, create 2 illustrations for the urban legend's before and after, accompanied by the climax moment.
- Decide a transition from Scott McLoud's Transitions to apply it in the illustrations.
Week 10 (29/11/2023)
Transitions
Transitions
- 1 frame: the possibility of the story is small because less information
- 2 frames: the possibility of the story is big because because more information
Figure L10.1: 1 Frame
Closure
- Law of Closure: objects grouped together are seen as a whole
- our minds fill in the missing information to create familiar shapes and images
Figure L10.3: Closure

L10.4: Scott McLoud's Transitions
Point of View (POV)
- who's POV?
- can tell the story from a specific character's POV
- emphasize one thread of the story
- get the most noticeable points of the narrative down as they have been told

EXERCISE - DIGITAL TRIPTYCH
Week 10 (29/11/2023)
Research
Instructions:
- Review the transitions of Scott McCloud: moment-to-moment, action-to-action, subject-to-subject, scene-to-scene, aspect-to-aspect.
- Select one transition type for each three panels: before, during (climatic turning point), and after the turning point.
- Identify specific moments or elements in the narrative that align with the chosen transitions.
- Create a digital triptych with three panels that clearly illustrate the chosen transitions.
Definitions:
- Triptych
- Usually a painting/ photograph, formed as a trio (Triptych Art: Thinking Outside the Box, n.d.).
- Originating in the Middle Ages, designed to be displayed together, the art form consists of a solid center and two adjacent smaller wings that can be folded to protect the panels (Triptych Art: Thinking Outside the Box, n.d.).
- Today, triptychs aren't necessarily foldable but still feature 3 distinct panels that together form a cohesive artwork (Triptych Art: Thinking Outside the Box, n.d.).
- Use to represent a narrative; it examines a subject from multiple perspectives, showcasing 3 separate elements that complement each other (Triptych Art: Thinking Outside the Box, n.d.).

Climatic Turning Point:
This was the climatic turning point that I did in Task 2: Decisive Moment (Editorial Illustration). The urban legend I chose was La Llorona.

Scott McLoud's Transitions Research:
I brainstormed each transition by referring to the notes on Week 10 so I would know which one fit better for my topic - La Llorona.
- Moment-to-Moment: This transition emphasises La Llorona's emotional and physical actions change in small, immediate steps. It's like watching each small movement or emotional change in real time.
- La Llorona stands by the river. (before)
- La Llorona weeps silently by the river. (during)
- La Llorona closes her eyes due to her regret. (after)
- Action-to-Action: This transition emphasises the progression of La Llorona's actions by the river, highlighting her evolving emotional state through these distinct actions.
- La Llorona stoops to look for children by the river. (before)
- La Llorona weeps silently by the river. (during)
- La Llorona holds her chest sadly by the river. (after)
- Subject-to-Subject: This transition emphasises the emotional connection between La Llorona and the river, highlighting how her gaze, weeping, and regretful closure of her eyes are connected with the river's reflective presence on her face.
- La Llorona stands by the river, her eyes fixed on the river that reflects on her face. (before)
- La Llorona weeps silently by the river. (during)
- La Llorona closes her eyes due to her regret, the river reflects on her face. (after)
- Scene-to-Scene: This transition emphasises La Llorona's feelings of loneliness by the river contrasts with the view of her presence as a haunting spirit among other children, highlighting different perspectives and reactions to her sorrowful state.
- La Llorona stands by the river, her eyes fixed on the river that reflects on her face. (before)
- La Llorona weeps silently by the river. (during)
- Elsewhere, children whisper about a weeping spirit haunting the night. (after)
- Aspect-to-Aspect: This transition emphasises separate elements or aspects of the scene, such as the dark sky, La Llorona's silent weeping by the river, and the tree's reaching branches, providing different perspectives within the same setting.
- The night sky is dotted with stars. (before)
- La Llorona weeps silently by the river. (during)
- A tree's branches reach toward the sky. (after)
I chose transition Action-to-Action to apply to my illustrations.

Sketches & Digitalisation
Pinterest Board (IVN)Sketches:
After deciding on the transition that would apply to this assignment, which was Action-to-Action, I searched out the pose reference for stooping (before) and holding chest (after) from Pinterest and Google. To be honest, the steps were the same as the previous assignment - Task 2: Decisive Moment.
- Action-to-Action: This transition emphasises the progression of La Llorona's actions by the river, highlighting her evolving emotional state through these distinct actions.
- La Llorona stoops to look for children by the river. (before)

- La Llorona holds her chest sadly by the river. (after)
Before the Turning Point: La Llorona stoops to look for children by the river. I decided to choose Pose 1 as the first panel, before the turning point.

After the Turning Point: La Llorona holds her chest sadly by the river. I decided to choose Pose 1 as the third panel, after the turning point.

I realised that the arm's position was wrong, and the hair length didn't look consistent with the climax turning point (during), so I rearranged it again. This was the final artwork of it.

I wasn't happy with her wedding dress and her hair length because it didn't look consistent with the 2 panels, so I changed it again. This was the final artwork of it.

REFLECTIONS
Experience
This assignment was a continuation of Task 2: Decisive Moment. The confusing part for me was Scott McLoud's Transitions because I felt like all of them sounded the same, yet I was still able to come out the ideas for this assignment which was quite surprising for me to be honest. Observations
I noticed that the art style that I applied on La Llorona: before and after the turning point, wasn't consistent enough. The main reason was I forgot how I drew her in the specific style I used in the previous exercise, so she looked kinda different in each panel.
Findings
Maybe I should record a video or take more photos of the progress of the drawing.
