REFLECTIONS

Experience
Before learning typography, I didn't understand everything at all, and I thought typography was just about simply choosing fonts for text and arranging text on a page/ screen. However, after learning typography, I realised that typography can influence emotions, readability, and the effectiveness of conveying a message. For example, Task 1: Exercise 2 - Kerning & Tracking, it’s not just arranging text, but the art of creating typefaces, understanding letterforms, spacing, kerning, and the complex details that make up each character. Not only for aesthetics, but standing from the readers' perspective to see whether it was readable or not.

Observation
After learning typography, I started to observe typography whenever, and wherever I am. It's not hard to see it everywhere, from street signs to product packaging, websites to magazines, advertisement boards to newspapers, typography is everywhere. This unexpected awareness of typography can inspire, deepen, and even lead to new ideas or approaches in my design work.

Findings
Learning about typography widened my perspective on font selection and text arrangement. I discovered that it has a significant impact on emotions, readability, and message delivery. Participating in exercises such as kerning and tracking revealed the intricate artistry behind each character as well as its readability considerations. Observing typography everywhere, from street signs to digital screens, now inspires new ideas and approaches in my design work regularly.
