Favourite Stop Motion Shorts

Stop Motion Short #1:
What drew my attention to this stop-motion short were the characters' exaggerated, emotive voices and movements, which added to the humorous effect by making situations genuinely understood and funny. It connects to people of various ages and backgrounds around the world.
Figure E1.1: Pingyu As A Chef, Week 1 (26/04/2024)

Stop Motion Short #2:
The usage of clay models is brilliant, each figure and scene item is handcrafted with great attention to detail, giving the animation a sensory feel. The characters' faces and actions are expertly adjusted frame by frame, creating a realistic yet pleasantly interesting creation.
Figure E1.2: A Grand Day Out - Landing on the Moon - Wallace and Gromit, Week 1 (26/04/2024)

Stop Motion Short #3:
It has a unique technique in which the puppets are made from cut-out paper, giving them a handcrafted appearance with moving joints. It allows expressive and detailed animation while maintaining a beautiful style. The ambient background and sound effects enhance the entire atmosphere providing the audience an enjoyable experience.

Progress:

1) Grouping

The preferred medium I had in mind was papercut. Tze Wei and I decided to work as a pair for this final project. In Week 11, we had an online meeting in Google Meet to discuss the synopsis and medium for this stop motion.

Week 11 (03/07/2024)

2) Pre-production

After grouping, Tze Wei and I started to discuss this final project. I then answered the questions in the proposal that was provided by Mr Martin. We decided to do "Nail It" for our working title. Papercut as the medium and Phone With Stop Motion App as the equipment.

Once we digitised the storyboard sketches in ibisPaint X and uploaded them to Google Drive, I compiled them into a PDF file and printed them at the stationery shop. Then, we cut out the printed sketches for the production shoot.

I also prepared a Google Spreadsheet listing raw materials like voice-over, sound effects, music, and more. This helped us to prevent getting lost during the production shoot and post-production. For your info, we might make some changes during the production shoot and post-production since this storyboard was only a draft/overall guide.

Once we were done listing the raw materials, we started to download the sound effects and music, and we also finished the voice recording according to our roles. My role in this stop motion was the manicurist (character B). We uploaded the raw materials to the Google Drive.

3) Production Shoot

This was the behind-the-scenes of the video shooting.

4) Post-production

We distributed the editing tasks as follows:
  • Me: Trimming, syncing voiceovers, and adding sound effects and music.
  • Tze Wei: Adding subtitles and color correction.

I imported the videos and voiceovers to trim and sync the audio. Yet, I realised the voiceovers were longer than expected, and some shots could flow better. As a result, I rearranged the video sequences and deleted some parts of the audio.

Next, I added the sound effects and music.

I used the Essential Sound menu to edit the audio elements—voiceovers, sound effects, and music—ensuring clarity and organisation.

For certain shots, the voiceovers were intended for special occasions, such as inner monologues or dramatic scenes, so I edited them in Adobe Audition.
Figure FP.10: Adobe Audition, Week 15 (30/05/2024)

After finishing my parts, I uploaded the file to Google Drive for Tze Wei to continue adding subtitles and color correction. As Tze Wei downloaded the file, she started to do the colour correction to the video clips.

Lastly, Tze Wei added subtitles to the video clips.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
This module's final project was a relief for Tze Wei and me, as we finished it before the deadline. The toughest part was developing a storyline for our one-minute stop-motion piece, especially using papercut for video filming. Unlike the clay medium used in a previous exercise, paper shifts easily with each frame adjustment, making it more challenging. Nonetheless, I managed to overcome these obstacles, which feels awesome. I truly appreciate Tze Wei's immense help throughout the project.
