PROJECT 1: INFOGRAPHIC POSTER

Week 3 (17/02/2025)

Requirements:
  1. Choose a poorly designed infographic poster from the Internet.
  2. Redesign and simplify it into an A4-sized poster, focusing on visual hierarchy, typography, colour, shape, and pattern.

Submissions:
  1. Upload the final infographic poster in PNG format.

Progress:

Redesign Infographic Poster

I started by searching the Internet for bad infographic posters (excluding Pinterest, as it rarely has poorly designed ones) and found several examples.

After consulting with Mr. Shamsul, he confirmed that Poster #3 was poorly designed, so I chose it for my redesign.

I then listed the original text from Poster #3 to simplify and refine the content for better clarity and readability.

These were the visual references for my moodboard.

I used two types of infographics—List Infographic and Flowchart Infographic—to explore different layout possibilities for Poster #3:
  • List Infographic (x2)
    • Sketch 1.1: From top to bottom, the text and images are placed alternately on the left and right.
    • Sketch 1.2: This layout is similar to Sketch 1.1, but each piece of information is placed in boxes with arrows indicating the directions.
  • Flowchart Infographic (x2)
    • Sketch 2.1: Incorporate a map flow to visually connect the steps from milk to cheese.
    • Sketch 2.2: Information is placed in circles, with a line guiding the steps.
After consulting with Mr. Shamsul, he mentioned that Sketch 2.2 was suitable and engaging, as it provided a clear flow to help readers understand the information. The target audience can be everyone since the topic is quite general, so I can choose any design approach that fits best.
Figure P1.5: Sketches, Week 4 (26/02/2025)

I used Adobe Illustrator to create the poster based on Sketch 2.2 as a draft, giving me an overall view to assess whether any visual elements needed to be added or adjusted.
Figure P1.6: Digitisation #1, Week 4 (26/02/2025)

I used references from Freepik for the clipart that fit well with the overall theme and traced them. I also explored suitable font styles for the title and body text.
Figure P1.7: Digitisation #2, Week 4 (26/02/2025)

I also explored two different styles for the cheese effect in the poster:
  • Duplication Method: Using a light-colored circle on top of a darker one to create a cartoon-like cheese effect.
  • Gradient Method: Applying a gradient where the lightest color is inside and the darkest is outside, helping contrast the clipart.
After comparing both styles, I decided that the Duplication Method would be the best choice as it matched well with the art style of the clipart.

Here are the colour palettes I tried. Mr. Shamsul suggested exploring the background with a gradient/texture, considering a cheese pattern for the title, and making the numbers more visible.
Figure P1.9: Digitisation #4, Week 5 (05/03/2025)

To complement the cheese theme, I selected Colour Palette 1 as the final choice for the poster. I then adjusted the font size and clip arts while adding texture to enhance the visual appeal.

Here is a comparison between the initial and final versions of my poster.

General Feedback: Ensure to incorporate design principles while redesigning the chosen poster.

Week 4 (26/02/2025)

Specific Feedback: Proceed with the digitisation using Sketch 2.2, start considering a font and color template that best suits your chosen poster, and take note that the title's grammar is incorrect.

General Feedback: Complete Project 1 by Week 5.

Week 5 (06/03/2025)

Specific Feedback: Overall, the poster looks good. Try exploring the background with a gradient/texture, applying a cheese pattern to the title, and making the numbers more visible.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
Redesigning an infographic poster was a challenging experience, requiring careful consideration of the target audience, colour palette, layout flow, and readability. Balancing aesthetics with effective communication was key, and through multiple revisions, I gained a deeper understanding of visual hierarchy and user engagement. This process reinforced the importance of thoughtful design choices in delivering clear and impactful information.

Observation
Small adjustments like tweaking font sizes or rearranging elements, significantly impacted the overall readability and flow of the infographic. Ensuring a logical visual hierarchy was crucial, as a cluttered layout made information harder to process.

Findings
Considering the target audience’s preferences and readability needs ensures that the information is both accessible and impactful.
