PROJECT 2: MINIMAL ANIMATED INFOGRAPHIC

Week 3 (17/02/2025)

Requirements:
  1. Once the Project 1 is complete, animate the poster into a 15-30 second static loop animation.
  2. The animation resolution follows the same as Project 1.

Submissions:
  1. Upload the animated infographic poster to your own YouTube channel.


Progress:

Animate Infographic Poster

After completing Project 1, I started to do the animation by focusing on moving the clipart elements since my poster had a more minimalist design. Here are the things I did for the cliparts:

Step 1: Raw Milk - Cow's Ears
I used rotation to animate the cow's ears. To enhance the playful feel and align with the cheese theme’s bright yellow color, which conveys a cheerful mood for the target audience—I added keyframes at 1-second intervals, making the ears move up and down for a more lively effect.

Step 2: Pasteurization - Heat Waves & Thermometer
I used position and opacity to animate the heat waves rising from the milk jar, creating a warm/steaming effect.

For the thermometer, I applied rotation at specific intervals to make it "shake," similar to the cow's ears, ensuring it looked more dynamic and engaging rather than too static or boring.

Step 3: Coagulation - Droplet Tool, Droplet & Bacteria
I used position and rotation for the droplet tool to imitate the dropping motion—when it moves down, the droplet appears. For the droplet itself, I used position and opacity to create a realistic drop effect, similar to a leaking tap, making the animation feel more natural and fluid.

For the bacteria, I used position to move them up and down at different intervals, creating a natural floating effect.

Step 4: Salting - Salt Bottle
For the salt bottle, I used position to make it move up first, then apply rotation to mimic the shaking motion, just like how we shake salt in real life.

Step 5: Pressing - Cheese Wheel
Honestly, I didn't have any specific idea for animating the cheese wheel, so I simply used scale to make it repeatedly zoom in and out. It ended up matching the poster theme (I guess...).

Step 6: Aging - Clock's Minute Hand & Hour Hand
I used rotation for both the clock's minute hand and hour hand, with different speeds—the minute hand rotated faster than the hour hand to reflect real-time movement.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
I almost forgot how to use After Effects since I hadn’t used it in a year, but thankfully, my friend helped me recall it on how to import Adobe Illustrator files (yes, I really forgot how to import file = =). I realised the importance of creating separate layers for each object—otherwise, everything appears as a single layer in After Effects, making animation impossible. It was a great learning experience, allowing me to recall what I had learned in Semester 1, and despite the initial struggle, I found After Effects really fun to use :D. 

Observation
Need to consider the animation and keyframes carefully when creating an object's movement to ensure it loops smoothly. Paying attention to easing and timing can make animations feel more natural and engaging. 

Findings
Properly organising layers in Adobe Illustrator before importing into After Effects makes animation smoother and prevents issues with missing elements.
